MAY WALKS with John Constable

South London's history vividly brought to life on these guided walks with writer and performer John Constable, author of The Southwark Mysteries and Secret Bankside – Walks In The Outlaw Borough. Tickets: £8 / £7 concessions.

Saturday 11 May, 11am - Roman London
visiting sites of recent excavations around London Bridge - Roman baths, temples,
a market-arcade and the final resting-place of a female gladiator. A journey back through 2,000 years to when this area was a bustling Roman port.

Sunday 12 May, 2pm - Charlie Chaplin's South London Palace
This walk visits sites from Chaplin's early life - old music halls, his childhood lodgings, the old Lambeth workhouse, his birthplace and the church where his parents were married.

Tuesday 14 May, 7pm - The Mysteries Pilgrimage
John Constable performs poems and songs from The Southwark Mysteries, on a tour of the places that inspired this epic work. From the Marshalsea Prison and Chaucer's Tabard Inn, through the medieval Liberty of the Clink with its taverns, bear-pits and 'stews', to end at Crossbones, the outcasts' graveyard.

Thursday 23rd May, 7pm - Crossbones Vigil for the outcast

gather from 6.45 for 7pm start at the gates of Crossbones Graveyard
Redcross Way SE1 ITA (facing The Boot and Flogger)

Vigils have been held on the 23rd of every month since June 2004. They are inclusive, secular events, open 'to all faiths and none'. FREE - donations welcome.

The vigil allows space for creative offerings and other acts of beauty. John Constable aka John Crow will perform poems from The Southwark Mysteries. Please bring a flower, a ribbon, a totem, a memento to tie to the shrine at the gates - or a short poem or song to dedicate to The Goose...

John Constable is best known for his dramatisation of Gormenghast and for The Southwark Mysteries, performed in Shakespeare's Globe and Southwark Cathedral, and as part of The Halloween of Crossbones ritual dramas and at many site-specific performances.

John Constable has conducted hundreds of walks including bespoke tours for VIPs and the City of London Festival. His walks offer fascinating insights into the most historic part of London through the eyes of a local writer. Watch this space - or please contact us to inquire about booking a private walk.
