Vigils have been held on the 23rd of every month since June 2004. They are inclusive, secular events, open 'to all faiths and none'.

Individual vigils are linked to traditional seasonal festivals. Our June 23rd vigil is associated with midsummer, St John's Eve. This year the vigil also falls on the night of the full moon and commences our tenth year of monthly vigils. Thrice blessed!

The vigil allows space for creative offerings and other acts of beauty. John Constable aka John Crow will perform poems from The Southwark Mysteries. Among the other performers, Marianne Hyatt from the band Country Dirt will sing Sadie. Please bring a flower, a ribbon, a totem, a memento to tie to the shrine at the gates - or a short poem or song to dedicate to The Goose...

Artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956) comes alive in this 'paranormal comedy'. Set in the artist’s studio at the Elephant and Castle during the Blitz, it shows Spare growing old in poverty, yet fiercely committed to his vision. In the course of the night, a rogue sigil unleashes unpredictable consequences. This ‘play conceived as an act of magic’, performed by the author, is both an homage to AOS and a playful exploration of Constable's own esoteric work to set us 'free from ourselves'.

The Southwark Mysteries and for his acclaimed stage adaptation of Gormenghast. Previous solo shows include I Was An Alien Sex God ('mind-blowingly weird' The Independent). John Constable is best known for his dramatisation of Gormenghast and for The Southwark Mysteries, performed in Shakespeare's Globe and Southwark Cathedral, and as part of The Halloween of Crossbones ritual dramas and at many site-specific performances.
